Golden Flashes capture 2008 regular-season championship
KENT, Ohio — The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team wrapped up the 2008 regular-season at Kent State University, falling 195.750-192.650 to the Golden Flashes. With the win, Kent State secured the Mid-American Conference regular-season championship, the fourth straight year they have won or tied for regular-season honors.
The Eagles were led by senior Jolene Worley (Orlando, Fla.-William R. Boone) and juniors Duyen Zu Vuong (Ottawa, Ontario-DelaSalle) and Erin Grigg (North Bay, Ontario-Widdifield). Worley led the Eagles on the balance beam, scoring a 9.850, finishing in second place while also collecting runner-up honors in the all-around.
Vuong and Grigg tied for third place on the vault, each carding a 9.825. On the bars, Grigg and Worley each received a 9.700, good enough for a fourth place tie. On the floor exercise Grigg led all Green and White competitors with a third place finish, scoring a 9.800. In the all-around, Vuong finished with top honors, putting together a 38.775 to narrowly edge Worley, who finished second with a 38.575, and Grigg with a 38.325.
The Eagles will be in action next week when they make their way back to Kent, Ohio for the MAC Championship meet. EMU, the defending champion, looks to repeat and fulfill the pre-season coaches poll that selected them as conference championship winners.
