DADE CITY, Fla. – The Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team carded its lowest round of the weekend to move up seven spot to finish in sixth place Sunday, March 2, here at the highly competitive Ron Smith/USF Invitational. The Eagles, who were in 13th place after 36-holes, fired a 289 in the final round of the three-day tournament for a 882 (301-292-289) at the par 72, 7,084 yard Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
Middle Tennessee State University won the event for the third consecutive year. The Blue Raiders finished with a six-under 858. Florida Southern and Marquette tied for second, scoring an 872. Southeastern Louisiana finished fourth with a three-day total of 875.
The Golden Eagles' Mike Van Sickle took individual medalist honors with an eight-under 208 for the second year in a row. Jacksonville State's Julian Colmenares, Akransas State's Lloyd du Preez and MTSU's Kent Bulle all tied for second each with a four-under 212.
Junior Christopher Ross (Dundas, Ontario-Parkside) finished as the lowest scoring Eagles in a tie for 12th place with an season-best 216 (73-73-70). The even-par place finish was his best of the 2007-08 campaign and his third top 20 finish of the year. Senior Graham Hill (Brights Grove, Ontario-Northern Collegiate (Indiana (Pa.)) closely followed with a third round 73 to tie for 20th with a 219 (74-72-73). Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) finished with a 223 (78-73-72) and a 226 (78-74-74), respectively. Peter Sauerbrei (Kingston, Ontario-Kingston Collegiate) rounded out the lineup with a 78 for a three-day total of 229 (76-75-78) in 62nd place.
Head coach Bruce Cunningham's crew returns to action March 14-16 at the Linger Longer Invitational hosted by Mercer University. The Eagles will be joined at the event by a host of national powers including the University of Georgia (1999, 2005 National Champions & 2006 SEC Champions), Kennesaw State University, the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga (2007 So-Con Confercence Champions), Georgia State University, the University of Memphis, Mississippi State University, Clemson University, the University of Mississippi, the University of Michigan, the University of South Alabama, Purdue University, and Texas Tech University.
