Frankowski and Woo pick up singles wins

MORGANTOWN, W. Va.- The Eastern Michigan University dropped their second straight match of the season Friday, 4-3, to West Virginia University. With the loss, the Eagles drop to 2-3 on the season while the Mountaineers improve to 3-1.

"We had the majority of our team sick this week, which hampered our preparations for West Virginia," said head coach Ryan Ray. "The fact that we put ourselves in a position to win the match under the circumstances is all that I could ask for."

The Eagles went up 1-0 after winning both doubles matches. Sandra Wikstrom and Aleksandra Stankovic handily defeated WVU's Speaker and LaFortune, 8-3. Joanna Woo and Flavia Micati teamed up for the second doubles win, defeating WVU's Burton and Pilsbury, 8-6.

The Eagles struggled in singles, only walking away with two victories. Vanessa Frankowski won her second straight match in two sets, 6-2, 6-3, over the Mountaineers Percival. Frankowski improves her overall record to 3-1, all at the No. 1 singles spot. The final win came from Joanna Woo at the No. 5 singles spot. Woo won a thriller in three sets against WVU's Pilsbury, 5-7, 6-3, 12-10.

The Eagles will travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to take on the Universities of Montana and Minnesota, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16-17. The Montana match is set to tip off on Friday at 1 p.m., while the Minnesota match will begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
