YPSILANTI, Mich.The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team finished in third place at the State of Michigan Classic Saturday night, Feb. 2, here in Bowen Field House. The 17th annual Classic was hosted by Eastern Michigan University.

Michigan took home top honors, finishing with a 196.800, followed by Michigan State in second (194.675) and Eastern Michigan third (192.625). Mid-American Conference rivals Central Michigan finished fourth (191.950) while Western Michigan rounded out the field in fifth (190.050).

The Eagles started the Classic on the vault, where senior Tawna Bennett (Jacksonville, Fla.-Edward White) finished in a tie for 12th place, registering a 9.750. Fellow senior Jolene Worley (Orlando, Fla.-William R. Boone) finished close behind in 16th place with a mark of 9.700.

Sophomore Erin Grigg (North Bay, Ontario-Widdifield) lead the way for the Green and White on the uneven bars, tying for 11th with a mark of 9.750. Senior Jennifer Charlebois (Oshawa, Ontario-Eastdale Collegiate) and junior Monica Lucas (Winston-Salem, N.C.-Reynolds) finished in a four way tie for 13th place, registering a 9.725.

On the balance beam Worley posted a season-high 9.825, finishing in a tie for fourth place. Duyen Zu Vuong (Ottawa, Ontario-DelaSalle) scored a 9.700, finishing in a tie for 11th place.

Grigg collected a sixth place finish during the floor exercise rotations, scoring a 9.775 while junior teammate Stefanie James (West Windsor, N.J-WW- -P North) tied for 13th place with a mark of 9.650.

Worley and Grigg both placed in the top 10 in the all-around, with Worley taking third with a 38.825 and Grigg tying for seventh with a 38.425.

The Eagles will be idle for the next two weeks before picking up action against in-state rival Western Michigan Saturday, Feb. 16. The meet against the Broncos also marks Parents and Senior Day for the Eagles. Start time is set for 4 p.m. in Warner Gymnasium.
