Breaks two-match losing streak

Minneapolis, Minn. - The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team ended its two-match losing streak by defeating the University of Montana, 6-1. The Eagles even their overall record at 3-3, while the Grizzlies drop to 1-4 on the season.

"This was a good performance, however, we can do better and we will continue to strive to do so,” said head women’s tennis coach Ryan Ray. “Hopefully we can carry today’s match over to tomorrow and put out a great effort against a solid Minnesota program."
 
The Eagles opened up the match by winning two out of three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead. The senior-duo of Vanessa Frankowski  and Tina Bestehorn defeated Montana’s Mari Castello and Rebecca Bran, 8-3. Newcomers Sandra Wikstrom and Aleksandra Stankovic teamed up in No. 2 doubles, blanking Cara Lehman and Jessica Souza, 8-0.
 
The Green and White won five of six singles matches, their best finish this season. Frankowski improved her overall record to 4-1 at the No. 1 position by defeating Castello in two sets, 6-4, 6-4. Aditi Krishnan won her fifth match of the season, moving her overall record to 5-0, taking out the Griz’s Bran at the No. 2 singles slot. Bestehorn, at the No. 3 spot, improved to 3-3 on the season by defeating Martyna Nowak in two sets, 6-3, 7-5. At the fifth slot of singles, junior Joanna Woo defeated Souza, 6-4, 6-4. The final win for EMU came from Flavia Micati at the No. 6 slot, blanking Lehman, 6-0, 6-0.
 
The Eagles face the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers Sunday, Feb. 17. Match time is set for 9:30 a.m.
