Hayvolla Leite posts 13 kills in the setback
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Despite a hard fought effort by the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team, the Eagles were swept (26-28, 25-27, 20-25) by Mid-American Conference West Division leader Western Michigan University Saturday night, Nov. 8, at University Arena.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 9-20 overall and 3-11 in Mid-American Conference Play, while the Broncos remain atop the MAC Division West with an overall record of 21-4 and a conference ledger of 12-2.
The Eagles were paced by senior Hayvolla Leite’s (Paraiba, Brazil-Indian Hills CC) 13 kills. Junior Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) added yet another career double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs. Freshman Ashley Mason (East Lake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) chipped in five kills and 35 assists.
The first set saw the Eagles and Broncos battle for each point, as neither team led by more than two points. The Broncos squeaked out the win, 28-26.
The Eagles took the lead early in the second set, leading by as much as six, 11-5, but a rally by Western tied the match at 16. The two teams traded scores for the remainder of the set, as the Broncos would once again edge out the set win, 27-25.
The Broncos carried the momentum into the third set, as the two teams battle for each point, but it was the Broncos who walked away with the 25-20 set win.
The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center to close out the regular season with a pair of matches. EMU will host instate rival Central Michigan University Thursday, Nov. 13, before playing Kent State University, Nov. 15.
