Senior picks up the prestigious honor for the second consecutive year
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Eastern Michigan University senior outside hitter Jill Wolosiansky (Uniontown, Ohio-Green) has been selected to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine volleyball Academic All-District IV first team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday, Nov. 6. Wolosiansky will now go on the national ballot for Academic All-America recognition.
Wolosiansky becomes just the second EMU volleyball player to earn Academic All-District honors twice in a career. The only other Eagle spiker to do so was Sara Schaub, who boasted first-team selections during the 1998 and 2000 campaigns. Last season Wolosiansky earned second team Academic All-District accolades, while teammate Kate Sulewski garnered third team honors.
A public administration major with a perfect 4.0 GPA, Wolosiansky has played in all of the team’s 105 sets this season. The Uniontown, Ohio native is on pace to surpass her career highs in nearly every statistical category this season, racking up 226 kills, 221 digs, 70 total blocks, 60 set assists, 17 service aces and a .179 attack percentage. Her 226 total kills are the third most on the squad, while her 60 assists are the second most on the team.
Already this season, Wolosiansky was selected the Mid-American Conference’s Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sept. 19 after being named the MVP of the Bash in the Boro Invitational (Sept. 12-13) with 2.42 kills, 1.83 digs and 0.83 blocks per set for the Eagles. The Uniontown, Ohio native has recorded a double-double three times this season, most recently in a five-set thriller against the University of Pittsburgh (Sept. 19). She also posted a season-best 13 kills versus defending division champion Western Michigan (Oct. 3) and notched a career-high 33 digs in a five-set loss to UMBC (Aug. 30)
One of just three MAC players selected Academic All-District, Wolosiansky was the only student-athlete on the first team to boast a 4.0 GPA. In total, five athletes on the university teams in district IV sport a perfect GPA.
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs. The nominee must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in both undergraduate and graduate work. He/she must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games.
