Karanja leads Eastern Michigan

 
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.—The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team finished seventh at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional held on the Purdue Varsity Cross Country Course Saturday, Nov. 15. The University of Wisconsin and the University of Michigan finished first and second, respectively, taking the two automatic bids to the NCAA Championships. The Eagles will now wait on word from the NCAA about an at-large bid, expected to be announced Monday, Nov. 17.
 
The Eagles had a solid team finish, as the top five scorers finished within 24 seconds of each other, while the top seven finished within just over a minute of each other. Additionally, Eastern was the top Mid-American Conference team at the meet, as Miami University finished ninth and Kent State University was 10th.
 
Senior Josh Karanja (Ottawa, Canada-Nepean) led the Eagles, as he finished 34th with a time of 32:18.2. Kyle Mena (Portage, Mich.-Portage) was next for the Eagles, placing 43rd on his way to running 32:28.6. David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary's Catholic) followed, running 32:30.6, good for 46th. Junior Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) was 52nd, running 32:35.6. Rounding out the scoring for the Eagles was senior Neal Naughton (Walled Lake, Mich.-Western) who was 58th on his way to running 32:32.1.
 
Seniors Josh Perrin (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) and R.P. White (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) finished as the Eagles' sixth and seventh runners. Perrin was 63rd, running 32:51.0, while White was clocked in at 33:20.4, to finish 83rd.
 
The Eagles will now await from the NCAA as to whether the team or an individual has qualified for the National meet, which is set to take place Monday, Nov. 24, at Indiana State University's cross country course in Terre Haute, Ind.
