Eagles Sink Falcons to Start Season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio- The Eastern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team got the 2008-09 season started on a winning note, defeating the Bowling Green State University Falcons, 173-125, in a Halloween evening match-up, Friday, Oct. 31.

The Falcons started the evening strong, winning three of the first four events. The Eagles then won four of the next five events and did not look back in picking up their first Mid-American Conference win of the year. Seniors Ashley Durand (Lincoln, Neb.-Lincoln Southeast) and Alissa Ricard (Tucson, Ariz.-Catalina Foothills) led the way for EMU, winning two individual events apiece on the evening.

Erin Rhoades (Sarasota, Fla.-Riverview) picked up the first win of the meet for the Eagles, winning the 1,000 free. Freshman Sam Partridge (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) was right behind her teammate, picking up a runner-up finish. Durand and Sheila Carson (Marilla, N.Y.- Iroquois) went 1-2 in the 100 breast before Elisa Torres (Antioch, Calif.-Deer Valley) and Lauren Zafir (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton) did the same in the 200 fly.

Ricard picked up her first individual win of the evening in the 50 free, hitting the wall only .03 seconds ahead of teammate Samantha Nameth (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor). The Eagles followed up with a sweep of the top three places of the 100 free, distancing themselves from the Eagles.

Sophomore diver Lesley Vizurraga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) captured the one-meter dive, while Partridge (500 free) and Nameth (100 fly) both picked up their first collegiate victories on the evening.

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow, Nov. 1, when they travel to Toledo, Ohio to take on the Rockets. Meet time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
