Two first half goal propel Eagles to win

YPSILANTI, Mich.- The Eastern Michigan University soccer team scored two quick goals and then relied on a stingy defense to defeat the Western Michigan University Broncos in Mid-American Conference action, 2-0, Friday, Oct. 3 at Scicluna Field. With the win, the Eagles move to 7-3-2 (2-1-0 MAC) on the year, while Western drops to 2-8-0 (1-2-0 MAC).

Junior Ashley Rodrigues (Pickering, Ont.-St. Mary’s Catholic) notched her second goal of the season when she found the back of the net in the 21st minute of the first half. Freshman Vanessa Atanasoski (Sterling Heights, Mich.-Stevenson) and Jessica Lathrop (Indianapolis, Ind.-Lawrence North) were credited with the assists, swinging the ball across the field before finding Rodrigues for the goal.

The Eagles tacked on another goal in the first half, as Carissa Wilson (Linden, Mich.-Linden) got behind the Bronco defense off a long pass from defender Kelly Poppaw (Englewood, Ohio-Northmont), staking the Eagles a 2-0 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

With the two-goal cushion, the Eagles were able to rely on their strong defense in the second half en route to the shut-out. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Monique Budani (Whitby, Ont.-Sinclair) picked up the win, improving her record to 3-0-0 on the year. Budani collected four saves and was active in goal all afternoon, breaking up several crosses as well.

The Eagles wrap up their four-game home stand Sunday, Oct. 5 against Northern Illinois. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
