Eagle Harriers Host EMU Fall Classic

DEXTER, Mich. -- The Eastern Michigan University cross country teams hosted its annual EMU Fall Classic Friday, Oct. 24, here at Hudson Mills Park in Dexter, Mich. Junior Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) led the way for the men’s team, while freshman Amber Hutson (Jerome, Mich.-Hanover Horton) was the top finisher on the women’s side. Vollmar’s time of 32:02 for the 10K was good for an 11th place finish in the men’s race, while Hutson ran the 5K women’s course in a time of 20:05 to finish 25th.

Both squads had a limited number of athletes competing in the non-scoring competition, as the Mid-American Conference Championships are just one week away.

The men’s team had seven additional athletes competing. Behind Vollmar was redshirt-freshman Austin Hendrix (Sylvania, Ohio-Northview), who finished with a time of 33:03, good for 16th. Ransom Brown (Coldwater, Mich.-Coldwater) finished two spots behind Hendrix on his way to running 33:24. Peter Martin (Traverse City, Mich.-West) was 20th, crossing the finish line with a time of 34:05. Kenny Wassus (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe (Oakland University)) was right behind, finishing 21st while running 34:13. Rounding out the Eagle competitors were Nick Deering (Empire Mich.-Traverse City West), Andrew Pfeiffer (Clarence, N.Y.-Clarence) and Ryan Grau (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Central).

The women’s squad had two additional athletes competing. Freshman Justine Baese (Elsie, Mich.-Ovid Elsie) finished 35th, running 21:01, while junior right behind her in 36th, running 21:02.

The Eagles return to action Saturday, Nov.1, as the two squads host the 2008 MAC Cross Country Championships. The men’s race is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Ypsilanti, Mich.. The women will follow at noon.
