Volleyball Comes Up Short at Akron

Victoria Randolph recorded a double-double with 14 digs and a career-high 19 kills

AKRON, Ohio -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (12-25, 25-19, 27-25, 20-25, 9-15) decision to the University of Akron in Mid-American Conference action Friday night, Oct. 24, here at James A. Rhodes Arena.
 
With the loss the Eagles fall to 8-16 on the season and 2-7 in MAC action, while the Zips improve to 8-12 overall and 2-7 in the league.
 
Leading the way for the Eagles was junior Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame), who recorded a double-double, notching a 14 digs and a career-high 19 kills on her way to hitting .386. Senior Jill Wolosiansky (Uniontown, Ohio-Green) racked up 12 kills and eight digs, while hitting .294 in front of a hometown crowd. Freshman Ashley Mason (East Lake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) had 43 assists and nine digs on the night.
 
The Eagles struggled in set one, falling behind 10-1, but battled back, cutting the Zips lead to six, 13-7, on a kill from Wolosiansky. However, Akron was continue to dominate, cruising to the 25-15 set win.
 
Finding themselves down early again in set two, 10-4, the Green and White staged a comeback to knot the score at 16 on a kill by Jill Bates (Billings, Mont.-Billings Senior). Kills by Wolosiansky and Mason gave the Eagles their first lead of the match at  18-17. The Green and White continued to build upon their lead, as Wolosiansky knocked in another kill, Kim Jarzynska (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Baldwin) recorded an ace and an error by the home team put the Eagles up, 21-17. Eastern would only let the Zips score two more points, taking the 25-19 set win.
 
EMU opened the third match, taking an early lead, 12-5, but Akron would not go away, as the home team battled back to tie the set at 20. The two teams went back and forth in scores before the Eagles found themselves down 24-22, a much needed kill by Randolph cut the Zips lead to one, 24-23, and an attack error by Akron tied the set at 24 and then again at 25.  A kill by Woloskiansky and Emily Good (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) would secure the 27-25 set win for the Eagles.
 
Eastern fell behind early in the fourth match, 13-7, but the Eagles put together 7-2 run to cut its deficit to two, 16-14. The two teams battled back and forth as the Green and White stayed close, but the Zips edged out the 25-20 set win.
 
The Eagles opened the fifth set, falling behind 4-1 before climbing back to within a point at 6-5. However, the Eagles were unable to hold on for the win, as the Zips took the 15-9 set and match victory.
 
EMU returns to action Saturday, Oct. 25, against the University at Buffalo. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Alumni Arena in Amherst, N.Y.
