Eagles give up two second half goals in loss to UT
YPSILANTI, Mich.- After a scoreless first half of play, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team allowed two second half goals, falling to the University of Toledo in Mid-American Conference play, 2-0, Friday, Oct. 17 at Scicluna Field. With the loss, EMU falls to 8-4-4 (3-2-2 MAC), while UT improves to 10-4-0 (5-2-0 MAC).
The Eagles came out of the gates in attack mode, but could not find the back of the net despite several chances. In just the fifth minute, Carissa Wilson (Linden, Mich.-Linden) fired a shot at UT keeper Vicki Traven, who came away with the save. Ashley Rodriuges (Pickering, Ont.-St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary) corralled the rebound, coming away with a shot of her own. Traven once again came up with the save, keeping the match scoreless in the early going. Both teams had opportunities in the first half, but the defenses held tough, sending the game to halftime with a 0-0 score.
The Rockets scored two second half goals within 10 minutes of each other, putting the game out of reach for EMU. The first score came when Brittany Hensler took a deflected pass off an EMU defender, firing from 10 yards away. EMU goalie Maggie Manville (Chlesea, Mich.-Chelsea) got a hand on it, but it was not enough, as the ball still found the back of the net, putting the visitors up, 1-0 in the 58th minute.
UT was not done scoring, as Nora Jereb played a perfect ball over the EMU defense, finding Kristen Lynn for the Rockets’ second goal of the afternoon, with 23 minutes remaining in the contest. The Eagles started pressing offensively, but the Rocket defense stood up to the test, shutting out the Eagles, 2-0.
Manville played all 90 minutes in goal for EMU, allowing two goals with three saves. On the other side, Traven made four saves en route to the shutout.
The Eagles will play their final regular season home game, Sunday, Oct. 19 when they host Bowling Green State University at 1 p.m. Sunday’s contest is also Senior Day, with Jessica Lathrop (Indianapolis, Ind.-Lawrence North), Ashley Upton (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) and Katie Zundel (Utica, Mich.-Henry Ford II) being honored before the match.
