ATHENS, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team lost a 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 12-25, 11-15) heartbreaker to Ohio University in Mid-American Conference action Saturday, Oct. 11, here at the Convocation Center Athens, Ohio.

The Eagles drop to 8-13 overall on the season and 2-4 in MAC play, while the Bobcats improve to 11-6 and 4-2, respectively.

Leading the way for the Eagles was freshman Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) with 38 assists, 16 digs and eight kills. Senior Hayvolla Leite (Paraiba, Brazil-Indian Hills CC) had a match-high 15 kills, while junior Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) chipped in 12 put-a-ways.

The Eagles came out right away in set one, taking a 3-1 lead before the Bobcats tied the score at three. The two teams traded scores before the Eagles began to pull away. The Eagles led by as much as seven and never looked back, taking their first regular-season set win against Ohio since Oct. 17, 2003.

The second was much closer between the two teams. The Eagles took a 5-1 lead before the Bobcats battled their way back to tie it at 10. The score was tied seven more times before Ohio took the edge and the set win, 25-21.

The Eagles and Bobcats went back and forth at the beginning of the third set before the Eagles took a lead at 5-4 to never look back. EMU tacked on two more before OU came to within one, 7-6, but was unable to capitalize as the Eagles continued to build their lead to as much as seven, 20-13, holding on for the 25-18 set win.

EMU and OU kept the score close in the third set for the first few points, knotting it several times before the Bobcats took the lead at the 7-6 mark. The Eagles stayed with in range though, but a nine point run by Ohio proved to be the difference, as the Bobcats took the set, 25-12.

The two teams traded scores throughout most of the fifth and final set. The Bobcats took the lead at 8-6 but the Eagles stayed close, coming within one, 10-9, but were unable to hold on as OU took the 15-11 set win and match.

Eastern Michigan returns to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center, Sept. 17-18, for pair of cross-divisional contests versus Bowling Green and Miami. First serve for both sets is scheduled for 7 p.m.
