BACK TO MICHIGAN: The Eastern Michigan University women’s track program will head back to the University of Michigan, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1-2, to compete at the Michigan Intercollegiates. The meet will feature several Mid-American Conference rivals (Central and Western Michigan Universities) and powerhouse Michigan. The Michigan Wolverines are ranked fifth in the most current U.S. Track and Cross Country Coaches Association poll released Jan. 30.
KEPPLER ON A ROLL: Janice Keppler won her third consecutive pole vault competition at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational Jan. 26. She won the event, jumping 12-05.00, beating out several University of Michigan athletes.
LOCKHART CONTINUES TO IMPRESS: Sophomore multi-eventer Brittany Lockhart continues to improve as the season goes along. At the Simmons-Harvey Invite, Jan. 26, she cruised to a second place finish in the triple jump with a 36-09.75 mark. She also finished seventh in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.17 seconds.
BREAKING BESTS: Several athletes broke their collegiate-personal bests at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational Jan. 26. Dejaa Shearer broke hers in the 400 meters, finishing third with a time of 59.17 seconds. Beverly Elcock did the same in the 800 meters, setting a new best of 2:15.50 to finish third.
FORMER EMU ALL-AMERICAN LELA V. NELSON: Former Eastern Michigan University track and field standout, Lela V. Nelson, defeated the 2004 Olympic Champion Carolina Kluft of Sweden, in the long jump, at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, Jan. 26.
