Senior standout defensive lineman chosen for North squad

MOBILE, Ala. — Eastern Michigan University standout defensive tackle Jason Jones (Southfield, Mich.-Lathrup) has been selected to play in the Under Armour Senior Bowl All-Star football game here in Ladd-Peebles Stadium Saturday, Jan. 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the game will be televised exclusively on the NFL Network.

Jones, one of the top defensive linemen in the nation for the past two seasons, is one of 100 of the nation’s top senior NFL draft prospects that have been invited to participate in the game. The players began arriving hereSaturday, Jan. 19, accompanied by the entire coaching staffs of the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders and more than 800 NFL coaches, scouts and top decision makers, to kick off Under Armour Senior Bowl Week 2008.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Jones completed his outstanding EMU career with a great senior season in 2007. He finished tied for seventh in the NCAA, and led the MAC, in tackles-for-loss with 1.63 per game. Jones finished fourth on the team in tackles with 70 and was named first-team All-Mid-American Conference. He was one of the all-time leaders in EMU history in tackles-for-loss with 50-for-194 yards during his four-year career, and he also recorded 14 sacks for 101 yards.

The Senior Bowl is football’s premier pre-draft event, with daily practices leading up to the 59th annual Under Armour Senior Bowl game Saturday. The game will once again play a vital role in determining much of what happens in this year’s NFL Draft. The NFL Network will offer more than 21 hours of exclusive HD Senior Bowl coverage, including live coverage of all of its practice sessions, nightly primetime wrap-up shows and the game.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan and his staff are coaching the South squad for the third straight year, while Lane Kiffin and his Raiders staff will be coaching the North team.

The players will go through the National Football Scouting weigh-in in this morning, and then step on the practice field for the first time this afternoon. All Senior Bowl practices are free and open to the public.

In addition to its importance to the football world, the Senior Bowl is also a vital event for thousands along the Gulf Coast, as the Senior Bowl is a non-profit, charity event that has joined with Food World to create the highly-successful Food World-Senior Bowl Charitable Partnership, which has donated over $4.2 million to charities benefiting youth along the Gulf Coast.
