DAYTON, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team pushed its winning streak to four consecutive matches with a 3-2 (30-25, 30-32, 30-14, 17-30, 15-12) victory over Wright State University Tuesday evening in non-conference action at  C.J. McLin Gymnasium. Four Eagles posted double-digits in kills including senior Abby Reenders racking up a career-high 18 kills and 27 digs.

With the decision the Eagles improve to 7-1 on the campaign, while the Raiders fall to 1-7. EMU’s 7-1 start to the season is the team’s best beginning to a season since 2003 when the Green and White rolled off to a 16-1 mark.

Abby Reenders’s turned in her fourth double-double of the season, while sister Becky Reenders added a double-double of her own with 14 kills and 17 digs. Senior Katie Bates had 14 kills and six total blocks and junior Jill Wolosiansky notched 12 kills and three block assists. Senior setter Kate Sulewski tallied 57 assists on the offensive side and sophomore Kim Jarzynka dug 20 balls on the defensive end.

For the host Raiders, Samantha Conner recorded a match-high 19 kills and 20 digs in a losing effort. Teammate Tara Geegan added 16 kills, eight digs and six total blocks as five WSU players reach double figures in digs.

In a hotly contested match the Eagles used stellar hitting and good defense to pick up the victory. The Green and White overcame an early 9-4 hole with a 16-8 run midway through the first game en route to the 30-25 win. Game two needed extra points to decide a winner, as the squads exchanged lead before WSU closed the frame on a 5-3 run.

The third set was dominated by Eastern Michigan, 30-14, but the fourth game the tables were reversed as Wright State cruised to a 30-17 win.

The fifth and deciding frame featured nine ties and six lead changes to decide the victory. WSU looked to be incontrol at 11-9, forcing head coach Kim Berrington to burn a timeout. That was all the Eagles needed though posting six of the next seven points to capture the game and the match.

Eastern Michigan returns to Washtenaw County for a two-match invitational at the University of Michigan Invitational Friday, Sept. 7, at Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Eagles square off with Xavier University at 11 a.m.  in a rematch from last week in the finale of the Aussie Xavier Invitational before tangling with cross-town rival Michigan at 3 p.m.
