Dewitt, Mich. native captures the two-stoke victory for the second tournament title of her career
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Eastern Michigan University junior Stephany Fleet (Dewitt. Mich.-Dewitt) capped a stellar performance by winning medalist honors at the Wolverine Invitational Sunday afternoon here at the par 71, 6,098 yard U-M Golf Course. As a team, the Eagles were fifth in the 10-team field that featured some of the region's best golfers.
The Dewitt, Mich. native torched the U-M Golf Course Saturday with rounds of 72 and 70 before turning in a final round 77 to finish at six-over par 219. SMU's Kate Ackerson, Notre Dame's Lisa Maunu and Indiana's Laura Nochta finished two stokes behind Fleet at eight-over 221.
The victory marked Fleet’s second career tournament title along with her setting a career low for 54 holes. Fleet's previous three-round record was a 221 at the Lady Irish Invitational, Sept. 23-24, 2006. The three-round score was also the lowest total ever posted by an EMU golfer in the eight years that the Eagles have competed in the event. The previous low of 223 was set just last year by Fleet in a third-place showing, Sept. 30-Oct. 1, 2006.
In her career, Fleet has seven top 10 finishes and has placed in the top 20 in five of the last seven tournaments dating back to the Saluki Invitational, March 25-26, 2007. Overall, Fleet is the fourth Eagle to claim medalist honors in the program’s 14-year history joining Stepthanie Smoot, Kelly Pickett and Catherine Fortin in the select group. Also with the win, Fleet moves into a tie with Fortin and Pickett for most career victories and is now just one tournament title shy of tying Smoot for most career titles at three.
As a team, the Eagles placed fifth with a team score of 924 (305-307-312) as the University of Notre Dame took home the invitational hardware with a 904 (303-297-304).
Senior Catherine Fortin (Beauceville, Canada-Polyvalente St. Francois) gave the Eagles another player among the top 20, after carding an 84 to finish tied for 15th with a 231 (73-74-84). Freshman Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) followed with a 240 (84-80-76) for a 38th place tie while junior junior Courtney Aili (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) turned in a 241 (81-83-77) for 40th. Senior Paola Sanchez (Bogata, Colombia-Cedar Springs (Mich.) rounded out the lineup with a 247 (79-86-82) for 49th place.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Marjorie Thuot (Joliette, Ouebec-Therese-Martin) recorded rounds of 80, 80 and 81 to tie for 40th.
The Eagles are next in action Oct. 9-10 at the Legends of Indiana Shootout in Indianapolis, Ind.
