Compete in doubles play together.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team of second year head coach Ryan Ray took two athletes, senior Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany- Albertus Magus Gymnasium) and newcomer, freshman Sandra Wikstrom (Lodose, Sweden-Katrinelunds Gymnasiet) traveled to the University of California-Los Angeles to compete in the All-American Pre-Qualifying Draw in singles and doubles competition.
In doubles, Frankowski and Wikstrom teamed up to take on No. 57 nationally ranked Kaluder and Miseviciute of Arkansas but the two Eagles were defeated by a score of 8-2.
"In doubles we had some opportunities early to break Arkansas' service games to give us an early advantage, but didn't convert.,” said Ray. “Then the match slipped away from us."
In singles competition, Wikstrom took on No. 122 Brittany Blalock of Cal Poly and lost both sets, 6-2, 6-3.
“This was a tough but rewarding challenge for Sandra to play her first collegiate matches in a national tournament, as she continues to develop this year she will be a very successful part of our team,” said Ray.
Frankowski will begin qualifying singles at the Riviera Tennis Club in Palisades, Calif., on Tuesday.
