Bestehorn and Micati Win Singles Titles at Gopher Invite

The two go 4-0 throughout the three day competition.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team completed their first weekend of competition today at the Gopher Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota. Senior Tina Bestehorn (Ebenhausen, Germany/Icking Gymnasium) came away as the Gold Singles Champion, defeating Karina Chiarelli of Minnesota, taking her in two sets, 6-3,6-3. Senior Flavia Micati (Rio de Janerio, Brazil/Cejo Terejopolis RJ) took the crown in the Minnesota Singles, defeating her opponent, Laura Arneback of Gustavus-Adolphus, 6-0, 6-0. Both Eagles went 4-0 this weekend.
Head coach Ryan Ray was very pleased with the way the team performed this weekend.
"This is a demanding tournament, which is exactly what I wanted to test our team," said Ray. "I think we showed for the most part on the final day, that we were physically, and mentally tougher than most of our opponents. This is a great start to our season with only one week of practice under our belt, and we should continue to improve throughout the fall and into the spring season."
Senior Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany/Albertus Magus Gymnasium) defeated Erin Karonis of Iowa State, in the Maroon Singles third place match, 6-3, 6-2. In the seventh place match, Aditi Krishnan (Markham,Ontario-Canada/Markvile Secondary School) defeated Sampada Kanade of Northern Iowa, 6-2, 6-2. The ninth place match saw Aleksandra Stankovic (Stockholm, Sweden/Walthers Gymnasium) fall 6-3, 6-2 to Hanna Robinson of Louisiana State.
Bestehorn was not the only Eagle competing in the Gold Singles as Joanna Woo (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate) defeated Carolina Hannes in a three set thriller, 4-6, 6-0, 11-9 for fifth place. Emma Czarnecki (Huntington Woods, MI/Berkley High School) also won against Erica Dobson of Gustavus-Adolphus, 7-5, 6-3.
In doubles play, Frankowski and Stankovic lost in the championship match to Ferazzi and Chiarelli of Minnesota, 8-2. Krishnan and Bestehorn defeated Hannes and Kanade of Northern Iowa, 8-4, in the eleventh place match. In the 15th place match, Woo and Czarnecki won a close set against Wylie and Wylie of South Dakota State, 9-7.
