Volleyball Returns to Winning Ways with Two Victories at UAlbany Volleyball Classic

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senior Becky Reenders combined for 34 kills in two matches to lead the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team to wins over Brown and Northeastern to conclude the University of Albany Classic Saturday afternoon in University Gymnasium. The Eagles defeated Brown, 3-1 (30-24, 27-30, 30-16, 30-27), before sweeping Northeastern, 3-0 (32-30, 30-16, 31-29). During the fourth game of the Brown match senior setter Kate Sulewski became the school’s all-time leader in career set assists, surpassing Sherry Anderson’s record of 4,513 set during the 1990 campaign.

The Eagles defeated Brown, 3-1 (30-24, 27-30, 30-16, 30-27), before sweeping Northeastern, 3-0 (32-30, 30-16, 31-29). For the day, Reenders tallied 34 kills, 16 digs and five total blocks to go along with senior Katie Bates totaled 30 kills, 10 digs and nine total blocks. Senior Abby Reenders accumulated 32 kills and 16, while junior Jill Wolosiansky racked up 15 digs and four total blocks in a winning effort.
Against Brown the Green ands White built and early five point lead, 10-5, and never looked back in the 30-24 decision. In the second frame EMU held a 14-11 advantage, but then a 9-4 Bears run gave Brown the 20-18 lead. The Eagles were never able to get any closer than one point the rest of the way during the 30-27 win.
As in the previous game Eastern raced off to the early lead, 10-3, but this time was able to cruise to the 30-16 decision. Game four was once again hotly contested, but Eastern Michigan would prove too tough taking the game and the match.
In the nightcap versus Northeastern, EMU overcame a 19-13 deficit and six kills from NU’s Lauren DeTurk to take game one. After taking game two, Eastern Michigan held off the Huskies in game three to take the match.
The Eagles’ Bates and Becky Renders led all players with 13 kills. For the Huskies, Jessica Tkachuk also had a solid match, contributing 12 assists, while Leah Neubeck had 19 digs.
The Green and White return to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center Friday night, Sept. 21, to open Mid-American Conference play versus Ball State University. Then on Saturday, Sept. 22, the Eagles will play host to the University of Toledo. First serve for both matches are for 7 p.m.
