INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team carded a 301 in the final round of the NIU Brickyard Invitational to capture a one-stoke victory in the 11-team field here Tuesday at Brickyard Crossing Golf Course. The Eagles posted a score of 600 for the tournament (299-301). Ball State University finished second with a 601 (294-307) and Western Michigan University was third with a team total of 611 (306-305).

The tournament victory marks the ninth overall title in the program’s 10-year history and the fifth during head coach Sandy Wagner’s three year tenure as coach.

EMU finished with three players in the tournament’s top 10, including junior Stephany Fleet (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt) who tied for second place after firing a school-record 143 (69-74). Her score of 143 broke the previous EMU 36-hole record of 145 set just last year by Fleet at the Saluki Invitational, March 25-26, 2007.

Fleet got the 2007-08 campaign off on the right foot, as she fired a career-low 69 during the tournament’s opening round. Overall the second place finish is her ninth-career top 10 finish in 21 career events.

Senior Catherine Fortin (Beauceville, Canada-Polyvalente St. Francois) carded a 146 (74-71) to finish in fourth place out of 65 individuals. Fortin’s fourth place showing was her 12th top 10 finish in 34 career events. Junior Courtney Aili (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) was the final Eagle to place in the top 10, finishing tied for sixth with a 36-hole total of 151 (76-75).

Sophomore Marjorie Thuot (Joliette, Ouebec-Therese-Martin) turned in a 160 (7-81) to tie for 34th place, while senior Paola Sanchez (Bogata, Columbia-Cedar Springs (Mich.)) added an 41st place tie with a score of 161 (79-82). Competing as an individual, freshman Lina Pasquali (Kendallville, Ind.-East Noble) tied for 43rd with a two-day mark of 163 (82-81).

The Eagles will return to action at the Lady Northern Invitational Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 23-24, in
State College, Pa.
