Eagles Drop First Match of the Season, 3-1, to IPFW

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Jessica Miller posted 20 kills and 14 digs and Rebekah Roehm added 15 kills and four digs to lead IPFW to a 3-1 (30-27, 31-29, 27-30, 30-21) victory over Eastern Michigan Tuesday night in non-conference action here at the Hillard Gates Sports Center. The loss was the first of the season for the Eagles (3-1), who were led by seniors Becky Reenders and Katie Bates on the night.

Becky Reenders led the Green and White with 12 kills and five total blocks against the Mastodons, while Bates added 10 kills and five total blocks on the day. Senior setter Kate Sulewski turned in 38 assists to go along with 13 digs and four kills.

In a closely contested match the Mastodons controlled the stat sheet, posting a better attack percentage (.166 to .098), kills (67 to 46), digs (78 to 69) and blocks (14.0 to 11.0).

The first game was back-and-fourth with neither side taking a lead larger than three points. With the score knotted at 20, IPFW rolled off 10 of the next 17 points to take the first set, 30-27. Game two was the same story with the two sides having to go into extended action before IPFW was able to take the 2-0 lead with the 31-29 decision.

The third game belonged to Eastern Michigan, as the Green and White out-hit IPFW, .176 to .122. Both Reenders and Bates posted four kills apiece while the squad committed just six errors compared to 12 for the Mastodons.

The final frame featured IPFW racing off to an early 10 point edge, 18-8, which EMU could never recover from.

Eastern Michigan swings back into action this weekend against Delaware State, Evansville and Xavier in the aussie Xavier Invitational presented by the Vernon Manor Hotel Friday, Aug. 31, and Saturday, Sept.1, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
