EMU will face five Top 25 teams from a year ago
YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team released its 2007-08 schedule today, August 27, as announced by second-year head coach Derek DelPorto. The Eagles will be facing five teams that were ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Top 25 poll last year including two in the top 10 in No. 5 Northwestern and No. 10, conference rival Central Michigan.
“We wanted to create a schedule that will prepare us for the MAC and NCAA Championships as best we can,” said DelPorto.
The Green and White will kick off its season hosting the EMU Open Nov. 3, before heading to the Michigan State Open the following week.
Ohio University marks the start of Mid-American Conference competition as the Bobcats travel to Bowen Field House for a Thursday night dual Dec. 6. Two days later the Eagles will travel to Kentucky for the Campbellsville Duals, featuring Campbellsville, Appalachian State, Liberty and Newberry.
EMU will stay on the road as they travel to Erie, Pa. to take on Edinboro University in the “War on the Shore” starting at 7 p.m. Northwestern University will make its way to Bowen Field House for a 1 p.m. showdown, Sunday, Dec. 16. This match will mark the first of three duals against Big Ten Conference opponents for EMU on the year. EMU will take on Olivet College, Thursday, Dec. 20 before heading down the road to the University of Michigan for dual matches with Michigan, Lehigh and Buffalo.
The Eagles will start the New Year off competing at the Lone Star Duals in Dallas, Texas, Saturday, Jan. 5. In Dallas, they will wrestle duals with the Air Force Academy, Utah Valley State, and Appalachian State. On Saturday, Jan. 12, they will travel to Cleveland State for a Saturday afternoon dual with the Vikings.
EMU will return home to play host to conference and interstate rival Central Michigan, Saturday, Jan. 26 in a match dubbed “Beauty and the Beast”, which will coincide with an EMU and CMU gymnastics meet.
The Eagles will again hit the road, closing out the season with three of its final four matches away from the friendly confines of Ypsilanti, Mich. and against top ranked programs in Kent State and Michigan State University.
“I hope people understand the schedule in regards to what our mission is here at EMU,” said DelPorto. “Bottom line, we are training for the future. Our team is so young that we have to compete with the best early in their careers so by the time they are upperclassmen, they will have built a team that is consistently in the Top 25.”
DelPorto and the Eagles, backed by the No. 23 ranked recruiting class in the nation this past off-season, will look to pick up where they left off last season, further improving on the best record in over a decade by an Eastern Michigan team.
