Volleyball Outlasts Charlotte, 3-2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team opened the 2007 campaign in style, defeating the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, 3-2 (30-28, 24-30, 31-33, 30-26, 15-6), Friday night to end the first day of the Comfort Suites Charlotte Invitational. Earlier in the evening, Appalachian State defeated Presbyterian, 3-0 (30-14, 30-17, 30-28).

Earlier in the evening, Appalachian State defeated Presbyterian, 3-0 (30-14, 30-17, 30-28).
With the victory the Eagles improve with 1-0, while the host 49ers fall to 0-1 on the young season. The Green and White were paced by senior Becky Reenders with 21 kills and a .302 attack percentage. Getting her first career start at libero, sophomore Kim Jarzynka tallied 23 digs on defense. Senior setter Kate Sulewski also turned in 60 assists, nine digs, and three block assists for the visitors.
For Charlotte, outside hitter Cori Dayton set a school record with 37 kills. The senior also added 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. Alma Arroyo started strong for Charlotte as well, with 22 kills and 21 digs. Junior libero Courtney Cowles added 21 digs on defense, while setter Eden Ramos had 67 assists for the 49ers.
In the first game, the Eagles to hit an astounding .415 in game one, as Becky Reenders had seven kills in the opener. On the other side of the net, Dayton totaled 11 kills, half of Charlotte’s 22 in the opening frame.
Charlotte held the Eagles to just .162 hitting in game two, as the Niners logged three blocks and forced nine Eagles errors in that game. Game three was much of the same, as the Niners put together .405 in the third game, which was pushed to extra points.
However, EMU finished strong, outhitting Charlotte .200 to .143 in the fourth game and forced Charlotte into a negative percentage in the deciding game.
Both teams play a pair of matches Saturday. Eastern Michigan starts off the day with a 10 a.m. match versus Appalachian State. Charlotte hosts Presbyterian in the 12:30 p.m. match. EMU takes on Presbyterian at 4:30 and Charlotte hosts Appalachian State in the 7 p.m. nightcap.
