Men’s Golfers Compete in Match Play Championship

Hill finishes as the runner-up in the tournament held at The Lake Joseph Club
PORT CARLING, Ontario -- Five members of the Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team were in action at the Ontario Men’s Match Play Championship at Lake Joseph Club, June 5-8. Senior Peter Sauerbrei (Kingston, Ontario), junior Chris Ross (Dundas, Ontario-Parkside), redshirt freshman Brad Larente (Cambridge, Ontario/Hespeler Secondary) along with sophomores Adam McCauley (Oakville, Ontario-T.A. Blakelocke) and Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) all took to the greens at the par-71, 6,616-yard golf course.
Following a successful sophomore campaign, Ross has continued to excel on the golf course. In the opening round, he upended Sean Burke, 6&4, before downing Michael Bolger, 1-up. He then proceeded to take matches against John Atherton, 2-up, Michael Gligic, 1-up, and Jeff Clarridge, 1-up. However, Ross the third seed in the field of 64 was defeated by No. 60 David Byrne, 4&2 in the finale.
Burke, the second seed in the tournament, rolled though the opening rounds with a 4&3 defeat of Brian Lee, a 4&2 decision over Ronald Totton, and a 5&4 victory over Ben Moser. In the fourth round No. 23 Jeff Clarridge pulled off the 2-up upset to end Burke’s afternoon.
McCauley, the 22nd seed, defeated Thomas Lee, 8&7, but lost to David Markle, 4&3, in the second round.
Larente, the 33rd seed, posted a 3&1 decision over Craig Cambell before falling to top-ranked Jimmy Latta, 3&2, in the second round.
Saurbrei, seeded 47th, lost to Ben Moser, 7&6, in the first round.
