YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team finished the season in the No. 12 spot of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) annual Academic Top 30 team rankings. The Eagles were one of four Mid-American Conference teams represented in the top 30. Central Michigan followed EMU at the No. 15 ranking, Northern Illinois at No. 16 and Kent State at No. 26.

Senior Tony Lyssiotis (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford), a political science major with a 3.32 GPA was one of four MAC individuals named to the 2007 NWCA All-Academic Team. Joining Lyssiotis was Wynn Michalak and Bubba Gritter of Central Michigan and Chad Sportelli of Kent State.

"It's great that our team is recognized for their hard work in the classroom. It shows off the quality of the student-athlete experience here at EMU," said first year head coach Derek DelPorto.

For teams to be eligible for consideration, teams comprise 12 student athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that were the entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. If teams had less than 10 entries for their respective qualifier, they may fill those spots with wrestlers that competed in at least one varsity dual during the season.

Individually, wrestlers must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule – and must have competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. The other way to qualify for the All-Academic team is have a 3.0 cumulative and been an NCAA All-American.

In addition to the top 15 finish, the Green and White also boasted four members of the Academic All-MAC team this year. Lyssiotis earned his second consecutive nod while Zach Donofrio, Chris Jenkins and Cory Mancuso Jr. were first time honorees.
