Volleyball Signs Four for 2007

Eagles Ink Players from Michigan, Pennsylvania and Brazil
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Eastern Michigan University Head Volleyball Coach Kim Berrington, in her continual development of one of the top programs in the Mid-American Conference, has signed four players to National Letters of Intent. Berrington announced today that Joi McKenzie (State College, Pa-State College), Lauren Boehmer (Livonia, Mich.-Ladywood), Hayvolla Leite (Paraiba, Brazil, Indian Hills CC) and Emily Good (Grand Rapids, Mich., Forest Hills Central) have signed to play for the Eagles in 2007.
McKenzie, a 5-foot-11 middle blocker, was a three-year letter winner at State College (Pa.) Area High School. During her senior campaign, McKenzie led the Lions to an undefeated regular season and a third consecutive third place finish in the state tournament. She was selected to the 2006 PVCA AAA All-State Team, All-District First Team and first team All-Star Mountain Athletic Conference. McKenzie was selected MVP of her team, as well as winning the Best Offensive Player Award. She also received the Saint Francis University Tournament MVP Award. For the year, she had 342 kills with a .475 hitting percentage and 82 blocks.
McKenzie had 140 kills and 47 blocks during her junior season, helping lead the Lions to another undefeated regular season. As a sophomore, had 195 kills, 45 aces and 57 blocks to help lead her team to the Regional Championship and eventual third place finish in the Pennsylvania State Championship. Her club team, Lions Pride, won the 2006 Early Bird Tournament in Columbus, Ohio and the 2006 East Coast Championships in State College, PA.
Boehmer, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter, joins the Eagles from Ladywood High School in Livonia, Mich. During her senior campaign, Boehmer was named to the First Team All-State Class B, All-Region 2007 Team, First Team All-Metro Detroit by The Detroit News and First Team All-Observer. Boehmer, an All-Catholic League Team selection, helped lead Ladywood to its first Catholic League Championship title since 2000 and its fourth straight district championship. She also was named the team MVP for the third consecutive year.
During her junior season, Boehmer was named to the first team All-Metro Detroit by The Detroit News, as well as repeating her selection to the All-Catholic League team. Boehmer was named the team’s most improved player during her freshman year, as well as helping her team win the regional championship.
Leite, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter, comes to Eastern from Indian Hills Community College where she was an Honorable Mention All-American in 2006. In addition to this award, Leite was named All-Region, Athlete of the Week and two All-Tournament teams in 2006. She led her team in kills and service aces during her sophomore campaign. She garnered Academic All-Region first team NJCAA during both years at the junior college.
Good, a 6-foot-3 middle blocker, was a three-year letter winner at Forest Hills Central High School. A two-time All-Conference performer, Good has led the team in blocking the past several years. During her junior campaign, Good garnered All-Area Honorable Mention. She was named Most Improved player during her freshman season of volleyball. A two-sport athlete at Forest Hills, Good was a member of the varsity basketball team for two years. A member of National Honor Society, Good has been on the honor roll all four years of high school.
The Eagles open the 2007 season at the UNC-Charlotte Invitational, Aug. 24-25. The Eagles then travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to compete in the Xavier Tournament, Aug. 31- Sept. 1. The Green and White face Wright State before heading back to Washtenaw County to play in the Michigan Tournament, Sept. 7. The Eagles will host Big Ten foe Michigan State before wrapping up the non-conference schedule at the Albany Tournament, Sept. 14-15.
