Former All-American and Midlands Champion

YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team welcomed a new member to its coaching staff, David Bolyard, formerly of Central Michigan Universtiy, as announced by head coach Derek DelPorto today, May 30.  Bolyard has served as an assistant on the CMU staff for the previous two seasons, winning the Mid-American Conference championship both years.

Bolyard, a 2005 graduate of CMU was a four-time national qualifier and 2005 MAC champion in the 165 lbs. weight class.  As a senior he carded a 33-5 overall record and was ranked as high as second nationally in his final season.  He won a school-record 21 straight matches during his senior campaign.

Following his senior season, Bolyard won the Chick Sherwood Award, presented annually to CMU’s most valuable wrestler.  He ranks seventh all-time with 109 career wins and his 22 falls are tied for the 10th most in school history.

He finished second at the MAC Championships each of the first three years of his collegiate career, and each time earned a wild card berth in the NCAA Championships.  His best performance at nationals came as a junior in 2004, when he strung together four straight wins in the consolation bracket en route to a sixth-place finish and All-America honors.

“I am really excited about the opportunity to build relationships with the guys on the team and watch them accomplish their goals”, said Bolyard.  “I believe Eastern is a program that is heading in the right direct and will turn heads in the next few years.”

Bolyard also claimed a championship at the prestigious Midlands Tournament during his junior season.  He was CMU’s first to win at Midlands since 1999.

The 25 year-old Bolyard earned his degree in entrepreneurship from CMU in 2005 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in athletic administration.
