Baseball Nipped by Kent State, 3-2

Eagles fall in semi-finals, will play in loser’s bracket game at 4 p.m. today
YPSILANTI, Mich. — The No. 1 seed Eastern Michigan University baseball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped, 3-2, by No. 2 seed Kent State University in semi-final action of the 2007 Mid-American Conference Tournament here Friday afternoon at Oestrike Stadium. With the loss, the Eagles fall into the loser’s bracket and will take on the winner of the Miami-Northern Illinois game for a chance to play for the championship.
Eastern (31-23) mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth inning down 3-1. Steve Bradshaw and Mike Boyd drew back-to-back walks with one out on Kent State (32-24) closer Steven Davis. Senior Patrick Dean pinch hit for Josh Ivan and singled through the left side to bring in Bradshaw and cut the lead in half, 3-2, with runners on first and second with one out. KSU reliever Jason Seelman came into pitch for Davis and got pinch hitter Todd Graves to fly out to center field leaving the Eagles down to its final out. Freshman Andrew Marshall pinch hit and fought his way to a full count before striking out looking to end the game and preserve the save for Seelman.
EMU entered the game with 19 hits, seven home runs and 18 runs scored in tournament play. All that changed as Kent State pitcher Kyle Smith picked up the win and cooled off the hot Eagle bats considerably allowing only one run on five hits with three strikeouts.
Sophomore Sean Hoffman (7-2) picked up his second loss of the season allowing three runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. Senior Matt Dillard pitched 2.1 innings and came into the game for Hoffman in the seventh inning with runners on first and third to get the Eagles out of the jam.
EMU was led offensively by junior Jeff Hehr who went 2-for-4 at the plate. Boyd and sophomore Kyle Rhoad both went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Boyd led off the second inning with a single and stole second base. Brian Blackburn grounded out to the shortstop with Boyd moving over to third base. Trumaine Riley single up the middle to score Boyd giving EMU a 1-0 lead.
Kent State took a 2-1 lead in the top of fourth inning on a RBI singles by Chris Tremblay and Doug Sanders.
The Golden Flashes struck again in the fifth inning on a bloop RBI single to right field by Brad Winter to move ahead 3-1.
