Eagles Pitch First Shutout of Season

YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team rebounded from last weekend’s loss to blank Northern Illinois 7-0, here today at the Chippewa Club in Mid-American Conference play. Stellar singles play and an early 1-0 advantage propelled the Eagles to their second MAC win of the season.

With the win the Green and White finds themselves above .500 again with a 9-8 overall record, and move to 2-2 in MAC play.  Northern Illinois falls to 4-7, 0-3 MAC.

Eastern Michigan was able to gain a one point lead heading into singles play by taking two of three doubles matches from the Huskies. The number one team of Vanessa Frankowski and Yana Parfenyuk topped NIU’s Megan Brooks and Brooke Forsberg 8-4 while Catherina Bestehorn and Aditi Krishnan were able to earn the 8-5 victory over Lilian Asuaje and Nao Umemura in number two singles.

EMU swept the singles matches from NIU and were led by Frankowski, the No. 96 ranked player in the nation who posted a 6-2, 7-5 Lilian Asuaje. Also posting singles wins for Eastern was Aditi Krishnan, Yana Parfenyuk, Catherina Bestehorn, Emma Czarnecki, and Laura Fernandez.

“We had a strong collective performance today. Everyone played solid tennis today, and if we can get more performances as a whole like this, we will continue to be successful,” said first-year head coach Ryan Ray.

The Eagles will look to serve up a non-conference defeat to Youngstown State University on Monday, April 9. The match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start time.
