RedHawks complete season sweep of EMU

OXFORD, Ohio — Despite freshman Jenny Scherer’s eighth home run of the season, the Eastern Michigan University softball team fell, 3-1, to Miami University in Mid-American Conference action here Sunday afternoon at the Miami Softball Stadium. With the win, Miami became the first MAC team this season to sweep the season series with the Eagles.
With the loss EMU falls to 19-19 and 9-5 in MAC action, while the RedHawks improve to 23-32-1 and a 11-7 league mark.
Trailing 3-0 in the seventh, Scherer put the Eagles on the scoreboard with a one-out solo home run to right center field. The blast was the eighth of the season for Scherer, the fifth best single season home run total in EMU history. Only three Eagles have hit double-digit home runs in a single season with senior Lauren Clark hitting a record-setting 13 homers during the 2006 season.
Sophomore Heather Han followed Scherer’s shot with a single to center field, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. But, back-to-back outs ended the Eagles come-from-behind bid.
EMU totaled just four hits in the contest with Clark leading the offence with two hits. Senior Michelle Lloyd (7-7) allowed six hits in six innings of work, adding seven strikeouts. The Eagles were their biggest enemy as they committed a season-high four errors.
Miami plated two runs in the first frame off back-to-back RBI singles. The RedHawks added another run in the fifth off two Eagles errors.
The Eagles will travel down the road for a single game with the No. 9 ranked University of Michigan, Tuesday, May 1. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Alumni Field.
