Softball Blanks Akron in Two Games to Clinch MAC West Title

AKRON, Ohio — Seniors Michelle Lloyd and Aimee Woodrum each pitched complete game shutouts, a the Eastern Michigan University softball team swept the University of Akron, in a decisive Mid-American Conference twinbill, Friday afternoon here at Lee Jackson Field. EMU took game one, 12-0 with a season-high in runs and hits (16). Woodrum allowed just one hit as the Eagles took the nightcap 1-0. Freshman Jenny Scherer cranked out a home run in each game.
With the sweep EMU improves to 21-20 and 11-5 in MAC play, while the Zips move to 17-23 on the season and 7-9 in league action.
With the sweep and a Central Michigan University-Ohio University split, the Eagles clinch at least a share of the MAC West Division title for the first time in school history. EMU also clinched the No. 2 seed in the MAC Tournament, May 9-12.
Scherer’s two blasts give her 10 homers on the season and move her into a three-way tie for the second best single season home run total in EMU history. Senior Lauren Clark set the record last season with 13 home runs.
In game one, Lloyd (8-7) was perfect through the first 10 batters and finished with a complete game four hitter. Lloyd recorded six strikeouts in the contest. The win moves Lloyd to 6-2 in MAC games this season with a 1.18 ERA and three complete game shutouts.
Freshman Jenny Scherer posted a 3-for-4 game at the plate with a double, home run and three RBI. Junior Ashley Strauss also went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI and a double. Senior Lindsay Schmid registered three RBI and two hits. Clark, senior Kayla Bluthardt and sophomore Heather Han each posted two hits, while Han added her third home run of the season.
EMU opened the third inning with three consecutive hits. Bluthardt opened the frame with an infield single to second base. Junior Heather Giroux followed with a single to left field that traveled threw the left fielder’s legs for an error, allowing Butlhardt to score and Giroux to advance to second. Clark sent a towering shot to the wall in center field for an RBI double. An RBI single by Staruss plated Clark. Scherer reached on an infield single, but an error saw the ball travel into left field allowing Strauss to cross the plate, giving EMU a 4-0 advantage.
A two out rally in fifth led to two Eagles runs. A bunt single by Strauss followed by an RBI double off the center field wall by Schmid accounted for the first run. Scherer followed with an RBI double to right field but was throwing out trying to advance to third, extending the EMU lead to 6-0.
Singles by sophomore Heather Han and Bluthardt pitted runners at the corners in the sixth. A throwing error by the shortstop allowed Han to score, putting EMU ahead 7-0
UA threatened in the bottom of the sixth after back-to-back singles started the frame. However, a sacrifice, strikeout and pop up got Lloyd out of the inning without allowing a run.
The Green and White put an exclamation point on the game, scoring five runs before a single out was recorded. Junior Stephanie Sabo starting the rally reaching on an infield error. A double by Strauss and a two-run single by Schmid followed by back-to-back home runs by Scherer and Han, gave EMU the 12-0 victory,
In the nightcap, Woodrum (10-8) out battled UA’s Julie Boyes. Woodrum allowed just one hit as Boyes surrendered three. Strauss, Scherer and Bluthardt recorded hits for the Eagles.
Scherer plated the game’s only run with a solo home run to start the fifth inning.
The Mid-American Conference West Division leading Eagles will conclude the 2007 regular season with a two-game series against Ohio University, May 5-6. Saturday’s contest is set for 2 p.m., while Sunday’s match-up is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Ohio Softball Field.
