Junior Catherine Fortin ties for 10th with a 152

SEDONA, Ariz. – The Eastern Michigan University women’s golf team fired its best round of the spring season with its final-round 313 to finish in fifth place with a two-round total of 627 (314-313) at the 16-team Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz., on Sunday.

Junior Catherine Fortin earned her sixth top-20 finish of the season and second top-10 showing of the spring by tying for 10 place with a 36-hole score of 152. Fortin, a native of Beauceville, Canada, closed the tournament with a three-over-par 75 in the second round on the par-72, 6,114-yard layout of the Oakcreek Country Club course. Fortin finish four strokes off the pace set by co-champions Liliana Alvarez of Northwestern and Diana Hong of Washington State, who both finished with two-round totals of 147.

Northwestern held off a strong final charge from the Cougars on Sunday. WSU produced the best round of the tournament with a 292 to shave 10 strokes off the Wildcats’ lead heading into Sunday’s competition, but Northwestern managed a 302 on Sunday to win the tournament by one stroke at 601. WSU finished second at 602, while Michigan took third at 609.

Sophomore Stephany Fleet carded her fifth top-20 showing of the year, finished in a tie for 20th with a 155 (76-79). Sophomore Courtney Aili also recorded a solid showing in a tie for 35th place by cutting four-stokes off her first round to end Sunday with a total of 160 (82-80). Redshirt freshman Marjorie Thuot and senior Kelly Boogaard rounded out the EMU lineup with a 161 (80-81) and a 164 (84-80), respectively. Playing as an individual, junior Paola Sanchez recorded rounds of 84 and 79 to finish 48th.

Eastern Michigan will continue its spring road trip to the Southwest next week with the Rio Verde Invitational, March 10-11, in Rio Verde, Ariz.
