Box score
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University softball team thumped Western Michigan University, 10-0 in six innings, in Mid-American Conference action, Saturday afternoon, here at Fran Ebert Field. Freshman Jenny Scherer continued her stellar freshman campaign, connecting on her team-high fourth home run. With the win, EMU improves to 9-15 and 2-1 in league action. The Eagles have won five of their last seven games.
Senior Lauren Clark registered three RBI and a double. Junior Ashley Strauss and sophomore Heather Han each knocked in two runs. Senior pitcher Kelly Tomczak threw the first two and 1/3 innings hitless, but three walks in the third inning loaded the bases for the Broncos and prompted head coach Karen Baird to bring senior Aimee Woodrum in from the bullpen. Woodrum (4-5) struck out two WMU batters to end the inning without a run scoring. She pitched the final three and 2/3 innings totaling five strike outs, while picking up the win. Both Tomczak and Woodrum combined to give up just two hits in the shutout.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when EMU plated four runs. A two-run doubles by Han and Clark put the Eagle up 4-0. A two-out rally in the sixth inning accounted for the Green and Whites other six runs. A solo home run by Scherer started the rally. Han reached on an error followed by consecutive singles by junior Jessica Grant, junior Lindsay Ritz and junior Heather Giroux loaded the bases. Back-to-back walks to Clark and junior Stephanie Sabo plated two runs and a two-run single to center field by Strauss, put the Eagle up 10-0.
The EMU softball team (9-15, 2-1 MAC) will wrap-up back-to-back games with the Broncos, Sunday, April 1. The MAC contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
