EMU Snaps Four Match Losing Streak
YPSILANTI, Mich. —The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team snapped its four match losing streak today, defeating the University of Illinois-Chicago 5-2, here at the Chippewa Club. The Eagles used stellar singles play to come from behind and clinch the non-conference victory after trailing 1-0 following doubles play.
"The ladies picked up their energy more today against a good team", said head coach Ryan Ray. "UIC has been to the NCAA Tournament eight straight years, and is a quality program. We need to carry that energy into practice this week as we prepare for more conference competition."
EMU took five of six singles matches from UIC to come from behind after dropping the doubles portion of today's match 2-1.
Posting singles wins for the Eagles were No. 81 nationally ranked Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) 6-3, 6-1, Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64), 6-2, 6-1, Catherina Bestehorn (Ebenhausen, Germany-Icking Gymnasium), Emma Czarnecki (Berkley, Mich.-Berkley High School), 6-3, 6-1, and Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic-Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion)
In doubles action, the Eagles number one team of Frankowski and Parfenyuk posted their second win in as many days, defeating Callan Smith and Lubica Nadasska 8-6.
The Eagles will be in action next Mar. 30, as they travel to Muncie, Ind. for its second Mid-American Conference match of the spring season against fival Ball State. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start time.
