Eagles Drop Mid-American Conference Opener 5-2

YPSILANTI, Mich. —The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team opened up Mid-American Conference play today, Mar. 23, against the University of Toledo, dropping the match 5-2 here at the Chippewa Club. The Eagles fall below the .500 mark for the first time since they started the spring season 1-3.

With the loss EMU now stands at 6-7, 0-1 MAC while Toledo improves to 9-3, 1-0 MAC.

Leading the way for EMU was senior Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64). Parfenyuk teamed with the No. 81 ranked singles player in Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) in the number one doubles match for a 8-3 win over Martina Wodzinski and Maha Guirguis.

In other doubles action, the Eagles were not able to get going early as they dropped the second and third matches. "We were outplayed by a team that had more fire than us from the start," said first-year Head Coach Ryan Ray. "I thought our leaders of the team came through today, however, we need a better collective performance. It is vital for us to make these changes to be successful in the conference."

In singles action the Green and White were able to pick up two wins in the third and fourth matches. Parfenyuk defeated Guirguis 6-4, 6-1 while junior Catherina Bestehorn (Ebenhausen, Germany-Icking Gymnasium) held off Nadia Zoubareva 6-2, 7-5 for the victory.

The Eagles will look to get back to winning ways tomorrow as they host the University of Illinois-Chicago in a non-conference match up at the Chippewa Club. The match is set for a 2 p.m. start time if weather permits play outside, if not then doubles action will be contested at 4:30 p.m. and singles play following at 8 p.m.
