Eastern Michigan University Leads League with Number of Honorees

CLEVELAND, Ohio Four members of the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team were named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team, the league office announced Wednesday, Mar. 14. EMU led all schools in number of honorees, and had a repeat performer from last year’s list in senior Tony Lyssiotis, earning the distinguished award.

“It’s much needed in our sport and here at EMU that our student-athletes take the classroom as serious as they do the competition side of things and be recognized for their efforts,” said first-year head coach Derek DelPorto.

Lyssiotis, a second time honoree, joins first-year honorees, and red shirt freshmen, Zach Donofrio and Chris Jenkins, and junior Cory Mancuso Jr.

To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered.

Donofrio posted an 11-11 record on the year competing in the 141 pound weight class for the Eagles, carrying a 3.31 GPA as a management major.  Jenkins, competing in his first year as a starter in the 133 pound weight class, notched a career-high ten wins for EMU and carries a 3.37 GPA.

Carrying a team-high GPA of 3.92 and majoring in physical education, Mancuso tallied 13 wins on the year in the 157 pound weight class.

Lyssiotis, a political science major with a 3.31 GPA, was part of a group of seniors that provided invaluable leadership for first-year head coach Derek DelPorto.  Lyssiotis posted 19 wins this season, ranking second on the team to fellow senior Jermain Thompson.  Ranked in the top four of the 197 pound weight class all year in the MAC, he posted a 3-1 MAC dual meet record and took a six match winning streak into the MAC Championship where he made his first finals appearance, losing to Wynn Michalak (Central Michigan) by a 7-2 decision.
