Indiana State Ranked 60th Nationally
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. —The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team was defeated by the No. 60 nationally ranked Sycamores of Indiana State last night, here at the Terre Haute Tennis Club, 6-1.
The loss drops the Eagles to 6-6 on the season, while Indiana State moves to 6-5.
The Eagles could not get much going during the opening doubles competition, dropping all three matches to the Sycamores. Indiana State would take the point and head into singles action with an early 1-0 advantage.
"We ran into a very fired up talented team tonight," said head coach Ryan Ray. "We need to continue to work on our intensity throughout our matches."
EMU would continue to struggle in singles play, dropping the first five of six matches. Posting the lone Eagle win in singles competition was senior Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic-Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion), defeating Kelly Hamm 6-4, 6-1.
"We have two weeks to regroup and get ready to host a tough Toledo team as we start the conference schedule," said Ray.
The Eagles will take a two week hiatus before their next match, Friday, Mar. 23, here at home against conference rival Toledo. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time at the Chippewa Club.
