EMU Takes Eight of Nine Matches from Detroit

YPSILANTI, Mich. —The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team extended its winning streak to three in a row with a decisive home opening victory over Detroit 7-0, today at the Chippewa Tennis Club.

The Eagles opened up today's contest taking two of three dobules matches played, giving them an early lead heading into singles play. Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) and Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64) defeated Annie Moore and Svetlana Flankova 8-4 while Flavia Micati (Rio de Janerio, Brazil-Cejo Terejopolis RJ) and Joanna Woo (Winnipeg, Manitoba-Vincent Massey Collegiate) posted a 8-3 win over the team of Inman/Stensvaag.

Leading the way for EMU in singles play was No. 45 ranked Frankowski, who defeated Moore 6-2, 7-5. Also posting victories on the day were Aditi Krishnan (Merkhem,Onterio-Canada-Markvile Secondary School), Parfenyuk, Christina Bestehorn (Ebenhausen, Germany-Iching Gymnasium), Emma Czarnecki (Berkley, Mich.-Berkley High School), and Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic-Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion).

"Overall I'm very happy with the outcome. We've been sharper in doubles in the past, but our singles competitiveness is continuing to improve. I felt our singles play was quite good today", said head coach Ryan Ray.

After playing three matches in the past week, the Eagles will enjoy a two week lay-off before their next match. EMU will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. Feb. 23, for a non-conference contest with Illinois State. The match is slated for a 6 p.m. start time.
