Winning Streak Reaches Four Matches
KALAMZOO, Mich. —The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team pushed its winning streak to four matches today, with a 5-2 win over the Illinois State Redbirds at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Mich.
"This was a solid win for us," said head coach Ryan Ray. "Illinois State is a great team and has won its conference six of the past seven years."
EMU swept the doubles action to gain an early 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. Leading the way in doubles was the team of Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) and Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64), who defeated Katri Miller and Veronique Parke-Bedard 8-6.
In singles action, Frankowski was able to remain in her winning ways as she defeated Katri Miller 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 for her 11th win on the season. Also posting victories on the night were Parfenyuk, 6-4, 6-4 over Parke-Bedard, Catherina Bestehorn (Ebenhausen, Germany-Icking Gymnasium) 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 over Tanja Hrovatic, and Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic-Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion), 7-5, 6-3 over Matea Simovic.
"We had tough matches that required a lot of mental focus, and we did a good job of keeping composed", said Ray.
The Eagles will be traveling about Florida over the next week with matches slated against Stetson University, Bethune-Cookman, and Central Florida.
