Eagles fall just short in come-from-behind bid

TAMPA, Fla. — The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped its first game of two today, 7-6 to Drake University, during the second day of action in the University of South Florida “The Game” Tournament, here Saturday morning at the USF Softball Field. EMU trailed 7-0 in the fifth but added six runs and fell just short of its come-from-behind bid.
Senior Lindsay Schmid went 3-for-4 at the plate knocking in and scoring a run. Freshman Jenny Scherer and sophomore Heather Han each knocked in two runs for the Eagles.

Freshman Michelle Hletko (0-1) had a rocky start to her collegiate career allowing the first four batters to reach base on three singles and a walk leading to three Bulldog runs. But, Hletko settled down returning the next three batters in order to end the inning.
Drake added another run in the second inning and two more in the third. Senior Aimee Woodrum came in from the bullpen midway through the third and closed out the frame with the score at 6-0. A solo home run Elena Leon added to the Bulldog advantage, 7-0.
The Eagles added six runs in the top of the fifth. Junior Stephanie Sabo advanced to first on a walk after a strikeout started the inning. Senior Lindsay Ritz singled up the middle and junior Ashley Strauss reached on an infield error, while knocking in a run. A strikeout led to the second out of the inning, but a walk to senior Lauren Clark loaded the bases. Han knocked in two runs with a single to leftfield, followed by an RBI single by Schmid. Scherer connected on her first career hit, a double that bounced off the leftfield wall, that plated two runs, closing the gap to 6-5 but EMU could not score another run.
The Eagles (0-3) will return to the diamond later today for a 3:30 p.m. game to face the winner of the UAB-USF game at the USF Softball Field.
