Clair Named MAC Wrestler of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Eastern Michigan University wrestler Sean Clair has been tabbed the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week, the conference office announced today, Dec. 18. Clair was one of only two EMU wrestlers to win both of their matches against nationally ranked No. 9 Northwestern and No. 14 Edinboro. This award marks the third of Clair’s career and the second this season.

Clair, a redshirt sophomore from Turtlecreek, Pa., entered the 2007-08 season after sitting out as a redshirt last year. During his freshman campaign, he posted a 28-11 overall record, including an 11-3 dual meet mark. At the prestigious Southern Scuffle, he finished in fourth place after putting together a 5-2 record for the tournament.

At the 2006 MAC Championships, Clair received a first-round bye en route to a fourth place finish in just his first MAC wrestling tournament.

This season, Clair has amassed a team best 14-3 overall record, including a perfect 6-0 dual mark. At the EMU Open, he finished third after posting a 4-1 record on the day. Clair followed that up with a fifth place finish the following weekend, Nov. 11, at the Michigan State Open, going 4-2.

At the third annual “War at the Shore” against No. 14 Edinboro’s Ricky Deubel, Clair posted a 4-3 decision and was one of only two Eagles to score points on the night. Against No. 9 Northwestern, he again met Eric Metzler, picking up the 2-0 shutout decision. Clair and Metzler had previously squared off at the MSU Open, with Metzler earning the 3-1 decision in the quarterfinals and Clair picking up the win via injury default in the fifth place match.

Clair and the Eagles resume action Thursday, December 20, when they host Olivet College. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Bowen Field House.
