CLEVELAND, Ohio — Eastern Michigan University senior wrestler Charlie Pienaar (Trafford, Pa.-Trafford) was named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week , December 13, 2007. He has a 3.84 GPA as a physical education major.

Pienaar, a senior on the 2007-08 EMU wrestling squad, posted a 2-2 record last week on the mat in the 184-pound weight class. The Trafford, Pa. native posted a 4-0 victory over Newberry College’s Keeno Griffen before following it up with a 13-3 major decision over Campbellsville’s Josh Deadrick. Both of Pienarr’s setbacks were extremely close, dropping a 4-3 double overtime match to Ohio’s Eric Schuth and a 3-2 setback to Liberty’s Nick Knowles.

Pienaar, whose brother, David Pienaar is a 141-pound sophomore on the EMU wrestling team, is the second EMU men's athlete to win the prestigious weekly MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week Award this season. Redshirt sophomore football quarterback Andy Schmitt (St. Johns, Mich.-St. Johns) won the award Sept. 27.
