Brown records 19-point win in season opener for both teams
YPSILANTI, Mich. — A visiting Brown University team spoiled Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team’s season opener here Friday in a noon start in the Convocation Center.
The game was designated Education Day with a large and enthusiastic group of area elementary school students on hand to cheer the Eagles, but Brown took advantage of that energy to record the 74-55 non-conference win.
The visiting Bears shot 57.1 percent from the field (24-of-42), including 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Senior guard Damon Huffman led Brown with a game-high 24 points, including making 6-of-9 three-point shots. Teammate Mark McAndrew added 22 points.
Eastern suffered through a cold-shooting day, making just 18-of-51 field goals for 35.3 percent, including hitting just 7-of-21 three-point attempts. Junior-college transfer Wendale Farrow (Sacramento, Calif.-Miro Loma-American River) led the Eagles with 15 points, while junior guard Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright) added 12 points.
The game started slowly with both teams trading baskets through the early stages of the first half before Brown started to build a lead on the torrid shooting of Huffman, who finished the first half with 19 points on 7-of-10 field goals. Huffman connected on all five of his three-point attempts in the first half as Brown made 8-of-10 triples over the first 20 minutes to enter halftime with a 45-28 advantage.
While Brown was shooting 62.5 percent from the floor in the first half ,the Eagles were struggling, making just 10-of-23 field goals for 43.5 percent. Brown also won the battle of the boards in the first half, 15-8. Farrow paced the Eagles with nine points in the first half.
Brown picked right up where it left off in the first half with a quick start in the second stanza. The visitors pushed the lead to 23 points with 12:22 remaining and cruised to the 19-point win.
Eastern, 0-1 on the young season, will host Radford University Sunday, Nov. 11, at 4 p.m. while Brown, 1-0, will head to Ann Arbor Sundary for a noon date with the University of Michigan.
