Team USA defeats Cuba for gold medal
YPSILANTI, Mich. — Former Eastern Michigan University baseball player Brian Bixler enjoyed success on the world level recently as part of the USA Baseball World Cup team that won gold in the 2007 IABF World Cup Tournament. Team USA defeated Cuba, 6-3, in the championship game held in Taipei, Taiwan.
Team USA posted a 9-1 record during the tournament with wins over Mexico (3-0), Panama (9-0), Japan (5-1), Spain (12-1), South Africa (4-2), Chinese Taipei (10-7), Korea (3-1), Netherlands (5-0) and Cuba (6-3). The lone defeat was a 6-2 loss against Italy.
Bixler, the 2002 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year and 2004 MAC Player of the Year, was a first-team All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger and the American Baseball Coaches Association. He was selected in the second round of the June 2004 First-Year Player Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
This past season, Bixler batted .274, registering 130 hits for the Indianapolis Indians, Pittsburgh’s Triple-A affiliate. He led the Indians in hits (130), runs (77), stolen bases (28) and triples (10), and was among the top five on the team in RBI’s, home runs and walks. Currently, Bixler is listed as a shortstop on the Pirates’ 40-man roster.
