EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team had six wrestlers collect place finishes while competing at the Michigan State Open, held at Jenison Field House Nov. 11. The one day Open drew more then 300 wrestlers from around the country.

Picking up fifth place finishes on the day were freshman Wes Schroeder (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Addison) in the heavyweight class of the freshman/sophomore unattached bracket; sophomore Jake Wood (Miamisburg, Ohio-Miamisburg) in the heavyweight class of the attached bracket; junior Josh Lewis (West Liberty, Ohio-Salem) in the 184 lbs. class; and redshirt sophomore and No. 19 ranked Sean Clair (Turtlecreek, Pa.-Plum) in the 133 lbs. class.
Placing sixth at the Open were sophomore Jacob Fairchild (Westland, Mich.-John Glenn) in the 184 lbs. weight class and freshman Mike Maguire (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) in the 125 lbs. class.
Schroeder opened up with two straight decisions after receiving a first-round bye. In semi-final action he dropped a 2-0 decision to Roy Dragon (Old Dominion) and was pinned by Eric Schwartz (Cleveland State) before taking fifth place honors over Chad Bleske (Michigan), who injury defaulted.
Wood started the day off with a 4-1 decision over Dan Thoburn (Findlay) before dropping a 2-0 decision to Cameron Wade (Penn State) in the quarterfinals. He would advance to the consolation semi-final round with a 4-3 decision over Justin Kuhn (Indiana) and a 4-2 decision over Jim Powers (Cal Poly). In the consolation semi’s, Wood was pinned in the first period by Travis Clark (Findlay). He would again meet Wade in the fifth place match, winning by a 5-2 decision.
After a first round bye and a second round defeat at the hands of Adil Kolovic (Northwestern), Josh Lewis would rip off three straight decisions to reach the consolation semi-finals. In semi-final action Jantzen Minton (Indiana) would score an 8-4 decision over Lewis. Lewis would earn fifth place honors after teammate Jacob Fairchild injury defaulted in the final match of the day in the 184 lbs. class.
Jacob Fairchild started with an opening round bye before defeating Ryan Jarvi (Northern Michigan) by an 11-2 major decision. In quarterfinal action Ben Kelto (Central Michigan) defeated Fairchild with a 10-0 major decision. Once in the consolation bracket, Fairchild would advance with by way of injury default against Abe Cross (Michigan State), and a pin just over one minute into the first period against Daniel Llamas (North Carolina). In the consolation semi’s, Jesse Strawn (Old Dominion) would hand Fairchild his second loss of the day, a 12-3 major decision. A fifth place match against teammate Lewis would not take place, as he injury defaulted, finishing in sixth for the day.
Maguire opened up first round action with a bye, followed by two straight decisions. First, an 8-2 decision over Michael Bunn (Edinboro), followed by an 11-2 major decision over Zach Davis in quarterfinal action. In the semifinals, Maguire would drop a 9-1 major decision to Eric Owlanoski (Michigan State). Robert Joyce (Northwestern) would hand Maguire his second straight defeat on the day with a 7-3 decision in the consolation semifinals. For fifth place honors, Matt Fields (Purdue) would need overtime to pick up the 9-5 decision, giving the freshman Maguire a sixth place finish on the day.
Clair, who is the No. 19 ranked grappler in the 133 lbs. weight class nationally, was the lone Eagle to have placed at both the EMU Open and the Michigan State Open. At the 16th Annual EMU Open held Nov. 3, he took home third place in the 133 lbs. weight class. He opened up the day with a 9-0 major decision over Owen Schafer (Ohio State) before falling to Eric Metzler (Northwestern) 3-1 in quarterfinal action. Once in the consolation bracket, Clair would take the next two matches by shutout decision; a 3-0 score over conference rival Seth Morton (Ohio) and a 5-0 mark over John Hanks (Cal Poly). In the consolation semifinal match, Will Livingston would walk away with a 9-4 decision, sending Clair to the fifth place match. There, Clair would again meet Metzler, this time winning by injury default.
After competing in two Opens in eight days, the Eagles will be idle until Thursday, Dec. 6 when they open up Mid-American Conference action, hosting the Ohio University Bobcats. Match time is set to begin at 7 p.m.
