FRANKLIN, Ind. – Shooting the lowest team round on the final day of competition, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team expanded its lead and cruised to a 19-stoke victory at the Shootout at the Legends. Eastern shot 293 collectively as a team over the final 18 holes at the par 72, 6,356-yard Legends of Indiana Golf Club to pick up its second invitational championship this season.
Eastern's 54-hole score of 888 marks a school record among three-round tournaments, seven-strokes better than the previous mark of 895 set just last season at the Shootout at the Legends, Oct. 9-10, 2006. The tournament victory marks the 10th overall title in the program’s 14-year history and the six during head coach Sandy Wagner’s three year tenure as coach
The Eagles were led individually by senior Catherine Fortin (Beauceville, Canada-Polyvalente St. Francois) in second place with a two-under 214 (71-71-72). The runner-up showing was Fortin’s best finish of the fall and marked her 12th career top five finish and 27th career top 20 showing. In addition to being Fortin's career-low collegiate tournament, the three-round score is the lowest in school history besting her mark of 216 set at both the Shootout at the Legends, Oct. 9-10, 2006, and at the Rocket Fall Classic, Sept. 24-25, 2005.
Following the first day of action EMU was tied with Illinois at 595, but the Fighting Illini posted a 307 combined with the Eagles' 293 to expand the margin of victory. Grand Valley place third with a 908 and Illinois State came in fourth with a 917. Four other Mid-American Conference schools were in the event with Ball State finishing fifth, Northern Illinois in ninth, Toledo in 10th and Bowling Green in 12th place.
Illinois' Seul Ki Park, who led by three stokes after the opening pair of rounds played Monday, claimed the individual medalist honors with a four-under 212 (66-73-73). Christine Zoerlein of Southern Illinois finished third at five-over 221 (71-72-78).
