Hokie Invite Gets Tough for the Eagle Tennis Team

Team struggles in day two.
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team competed in day two of the Hokie Fall Invitational in Blacksburg, Va., on the campus of Virginia Tech. at the Burrows/ Burleson Tennis Center. The Eagles once again found themselves on the short end of the stick in singles and doubles competition.
After winning her first round match yesterday, senior Vanessa Frankowski lost a three set thriller to Jessica Long of Virginia Tech. 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in flight A singles. In consolation, she went on to face Ohio State’s Paloma Escobedo and lost, 6-3, 6-3. She goes on to face Jessica Kenner of Marshall Sunday.
Newcomer Aleksandra Stankovic took on Yulia Kashelina of Marshall and fell, 6-1, 6-0. Aditi Krishnan, who was also competing in flight B. She too, lost a three set match to Holly Johnson of Virginia Tech., 4-6, 6-3, 10-6. She will face Davidson’s Teresa Wang tomorrow.
In flight C, Stephanie Brown of Liberty defeated EMU’s Tina Bestehorn, 6-4, 6-3. Bestehorn will face Kim Whelan in the morning.
Flight D turned out to be interesting for the Eagles. Emma Czarnecki took a two set match from Chelsea Cramp of Virginia Tech., 6-2, 6-1, and Joanna Woo took a two set match from Barrett Donner of James Madison, 6-1, 6-2, and then went on to beat Ali Gores of Davidson, 6-1, 6-1.The two teammates will meet up in tomorrow’s consolation match.
The final Eagle competing in singles was Flavia Micati, who won her first consolation match to Jessica Margolis of Elon, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5. She will face Virginia Tech’s Sarah Ahmed tomorrow.
Frankowski and Wikstrom teamed up in flight A doubles. The two received a bye yesterday and lost a close match to DiPastina and Keesey of Ohio State. Bestehorn and Stankovic lost to Beermann and Brouwer of Tech. and then went on and lost another match to Bailey and Tucci of Elon.
In Flight B, Czarnecki and Micati took on Lindsey and Price of Radford, but their opponents withdrew at the 4-1 mark. The then went on to face Galainena and Skeeters of Davidson and won, 8-3. They face Noldin and Tomaic of Radford tomorrow morning.
