Eagles knock off MAC West Division co-leading Chippewas

Box score.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team upended Mid-American Conference West Division co-leader Central Michigan University, 3-2 (30-27, 28-30, 30-21, 28-30, 15-12), here Thursday night at Rose Arena. The twin sister duo of Abby Reenders and Becky Reenders combined for 43 of the team’s 77 kills during the five-set victory.

With the win the Eagles up their record to 13-7 (3-2 MAC) along with equaling the squad’s 2006 win total when it finished with a 13-17 mark. On the other side of the court Central Michigan drops to 12-5 (3-2 MAC) and falls out of a first place tie with Western Michigan atop the MAC West Division standings.

The EMU offense, which hit a solid .203 for the match, was led by senior Becky Reenders (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) with a game-high 23 kills. Senior Abby Reenders (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven)  red-hot play by notching another double-double with 20 kills and 21 digs. Freshman Lauren Boehmer (Livonia, Mich.-Ladywood) chipped in nine kills to go along with senior Katie Bates (Delta, Ohio-Evergreen) eight put-aways. Senior Kate Sulewski (Ottawa Lake, Mich.-Bedford) continued her assault on the EMU record books, adding 62 set assists along with 22 digs and five kills.

For Central Michigan, Kate Fissel recorded a double-double with 23 kills and 10 digs on the night.  Sarah Warner posted 16 digs and Whitney Evers turned in 14 digs on the night for the Maroon and Gold.

Eastern took the first game by a score of 30-27 but Central rebounded in the second stanza with a 30-28 decision of its own to knot the match at 1-1. The Green and White would then reclaim the edge in the third game with a 30-21 before CMU responded with another 30-28 victory.

In the fifth and deciding match the Chippewas built an early 5-2 advantage before the Eagles rolled off eight of the next 12 points to take a one-point lead, 10-9. The EMU margin would grown to three, 14-11, before Bates would close out the game and the match with her eighth kill on the night.

With the three-match road trip complete the Eagles return to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center Saturday, Oct. 6, for a showdown against four-time MAC Champion Ohio University. The Bobcats enter the game ranked No. 21 in the latest CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
